About Us

The Watertown Chess Club, a small Island of competitive tournament chess, is your opportunity to connect to the wonderful world of state, national and international chess. We continue our search for serious tournament chess players interested in playing tournaments with a variety of time controls. We offer blitz (5 minute), quick (25 minute) and long- time control (Game in 90 minutes) tournaments spread over a four to seven week time frame at a rate of one game weekly.

Organized in 1994, Watertown Chess has been conducting this type of schedule since the mid 2000’s. In 2018 our membership numbered a dozen members with USCF ratings ranging from 1000 to 2050.

Our club schedule consists of seven scheduled weeknight tournaments, a few surprise quick chess events as well as two weekend tournaments, the Watertown Open and the Jefferson County Championship. We conclude each year with the Club Championship, open to the top four players in our annual standings and a concurrent Holiday Invitational Tournament, where we invite local non-member chess players to compete with club members in an unrated event. Other activities include two or three surprise quick chess tournaments, free training events in February and our annual endgame media presentation.

Membership costs are $35 per year plus USCF membership. Club membership offers access to all weeknight chess activities. Our two weekend tournaments carry a fee of $25.00 and offer an opportunity for championship titles, games against other visiting USCF players and small cash prizes.

      Hans,
Mike is president, but not around much and won’t be till after the election is over…either the primaries or November. I think that you are listed as an officer…tres or secty. I’m the TD, tournament coordinator ,handle the $ , and keep in touch with those not around. We need help. There is soooooo much that we could do with this club; take a look sometime at the Marshall Chess Club in Manhattan.WOW!!!!

    Hey Watertown Chess Club,
Nice meeting some of you at Henry’s Mind Blast Tournament!!
I have set up a team on chess.com that is called Northern New York Mind Blasters. I have used this name so that the people that were in the tourney could easily recognize it.
I would like to extend an invitation to all of your members and your chess playing friends to please join this group.
On chess.com my username is RegicidalManiac. If you are already a member of chess.com drop me a message and I will send you an invitation. If not a member, please join,it is free and there is also an option to be a premium member. If you become a premium member please use my name as a referral!
I will be joining your club as well. My work schedule is constantly changing so it might take me some time to get out there, and I may have a bit of trouble getting to meetings regularly, but I certainly will be there as much and as soon as possible.
I feel that the chess.com group will be a great way for us to get to know each other better and a very good way to reach people very quickly with information about any upcoming events.
Please join the team “Northern New York Mind Blasters” on chess.com. There are many team activities such as team matches, group discussion and vote chess to enjoy. If anyone has any questions please contact me either at chess.com or at my email. fredkenyon11@yahoo.com
Thank you very much and I will look forward to seeing you on the board!!

You should have a photo gallery on this website. Also I recommend that one game a month should be sent to the watertown daily times so that a chess column can be started in order to attract more players.

    • Don Klug says:

David, Nice idea on publishing a game monthly in the local paper. My neighbor is the managing editor. I’ll see.

Good morning everyone. It was a pleasure meeting everyone at the Open Tournament on the 2nd. There is an Open Tournament happening on the 30th in Malone if anyone is interested. There are three divisions: under 12, 13-17, and 18+. If you take a look at the website, you should find all the answers you need or contact information to get answers. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing anyone that wishes to attend. Have a safe and wonderful Memorial Day weekend. -Sonya

Maybe it is time to make a social media page to get players from surrounding areas to join the club.
